The Myths And The Magic

Like all breeds of animals, the true origin of the curly horse may never be known for sure. Many oral and written histories have been passed down, all of which contribute to the myth of the curly horse. The curly coat's hardiness, temperament, and other unique qualities all contribute to the magic of this rare breed

Whether the curly coat of these marvelous horses in North America originated by mutation or migration is still one of the unsolved mysteries of this breed, and often hotly debated among curly coat horse fanciers. It is widely believed that an interest in the curly coats began through the experience of the Damales family of Nevada. After a harsh winter in 1932 much of the domestic cattle and horses, and much of the wild horse herds were decimated. The Damales noticed that many of the wild horses that had survived the bad winter were curly coated. They began breeding these curly coated survivors with their ranch stock and so began the interest in the curly coat horse. Research has shown that curly coated horses were likely present in North America long before the Damales.

Renowned for its hardiness, its ability to assimilate feed, its calmness and gentle dispostion, and of course its lovely curly coat, the curly coat horse is a wonderful breed.

A unique characteristic of the curly coat horse is that they are hypo-allergenic, making the curly coat an ideal choice for those who love horses but have difficulties being around them because of allergies.

Hypo-Allergenic and Hip

This hypo-allergenic characteristic of the curly horse has been studied at a variety of scientific institutions including the University of Aachen. A unique protein structure in the skin of a curly horse, different from other horses seems to contribute to this hypoallergenic qulaity.

The hair of the curly horse is different from other horses as well in that the fibre is round instead of flat, and barbed or feathered. Tests have shown that the hair is actually a mohair, similar to the hair of angora goats, and it can be spun and woven into garments.

If you love horses, but allergies have kept you away, Blue Ridge Curlies curly horses are an ideal solution for you.
